My 2014 in video games

Posted by admin on January 1st, 2015

Dull title I know but I thought it would be an interesting experiment to look back on the games I have played this year, turns out there are quite a few and I have no doubt I’ve missed some out. The full list is at the bottom of the post but there are a few I wanted to call out.

Sniper Elite V2 and Sniper Elite III are my guilty pleasures of PC gaming this year. I’d heard of the series but it wasn’t until I was watching some old videos on YouTube that I paid a bit more attention. I was expecting III to be released and so I went and had a look at V2 to see if it was worth picking up and it looked exactly like my kind of game. It’s a slower game than most shooters and that suits me fine, there’s a fair bit of stealth as well. V2 is a little linear but I think III is a much better game with basically the same mechanics but a more ‘open-world’ feel.

Wolfenstein – The New Order. I really enjoyed this game and for someone of my age who played the original it’s a must play. Great graphics, really chunky, visceral gun play and a trip into space what more could you want?

GTA V – I played the Xbox 360 version. To be honest I’m not really sure what to think about this game. I’ve put in quite a few hours, finished the missions and heists and started trying to mop up all the collectibles. I really didn’t like the torture scene, I thought it was unnecessary. It took me ages to get along with playing Trevor and I spent ages trying to avoid playing as him because I just didn’t like him at all. I guess that’s the point of the character but personally I found the character too off-putting.

Spintires – I am still really enjoying this game even though it does seem to have a tendency to delete my saved games. To my mind it’s not quite finished but it’s still a hell of a lot of fun driving trucks through mud.

The interesting thing for me when I reviewed this list is that 2014 has been the year of the next gen console but I’ve not really played on either my Xbox One or PS4. I played a little Killzone when I had time and thought it was a cracking game but I didn’t stick with it. I got drawn back to my PC again and again and obviously had to play GTA V as soon as it came out.
